From this book, I learned about staple colors and fashion colors.
staple colors reders to the colors with realtaively long shelf-life, e.g. black , white, dark blue, greens, brown, and grey, beige and navy. staple colors are often used by the forcasters and designer to anchor fashionable colors.
Fashion color or fad colors come and go quickly, possibly in fashion for just one season, e.g. purple and lime.
I have also learned about the industrial revolution in fashion.
in the Pre-industrial revolution, consumer initiated by social class status were the prime driving forces of fashion. designers had close relationship with clients.
to the end of the 19th century, new sources of inspiration were sought by manufacturers, demonstrating an early demand for forcasting. while couture designers maintained their links with clients, the industry didn't.
by the 20th century, direct links between designers and clients decreased, only existed in the haute couture. driving force initiated by the ready to wear garments affordable by all.
as color is a realtively easily changeable factor. color therefore has become a very important factor of the driving force as well as a powerful marketing aide. sales have become heavily dependant upon seasonal color stories.
